Sex Tip: Culture Take her to the opera? Whatever. What we had in mind is a uterine culture to detect any infections prior to breeding. Uterine infections are the leading culprit that we have seen with mares that cycle but fail to conceive. Contrary to some misperceptions, mares, including maiden mares, are more likely to get recurring infections from fecal matter due to their own anatomical construction, than from the breeding process. Although getting a culture adds a little to the veterinary costs, diagnosing and treating the infection promptly reduces wasted effort, and expensive mare care or semen shipment fees.
